It's not an unreasonable request, but i'm not aware that lack of this
feature causes a demonstrable regression or other  bug against another
package.  Therefore it really should have a FinalFreeze Exception from
the release team.

If you could provide a 2.2.17 patch or debdiff, it would certainly help
get this moving
