It sounds like the core of the problem is compiz (your window manager)
refusing to draw other windows while it is waiting for firefox to
update.

Please give the output of:
   cat /etc/lsb-release
and try doing
   apport-collect 728017
on the laptop again, which hopefully will give us more info about what's going on with compiz.
