I think this is two bugs.

When the OS is installed, unity-2d somewhat works with -vga vmware.  (I
can't get the menu from top left to come down, but most of the rest
seems to work fine).

So I think that

a. unity-2d fails to start with -vga cirrus
b. with -vga vmware on the live-cd, we still have the old bug of the interface hanging (I believe it is still open).
