Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.

As you suggested, the logs show:


Dec 29 20:17:29 matthew-desktop mysqld: 101229 20:17:29 [ERROR] Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: Cannot assign requested address
Dec 29 20:17:29 matthew-desktop mysqld: 101229 20:17:29 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?

Does all go well if you shut down php-mysql and then start mysql?
