Re #28, simplexml is aleady available for lucid.

On my lucid system, which has the following PHP pacakges installed:
  libapache2-mod-php5,  php-doc, php5,  php5-cli , php5-common , php5-curl  , php5-gd, php5-gmp, php5-pgsql    

 I can run:
     php5 --ri simplexml
and it's there.
