Please could you try forcing a re-install of the mysql-dfsg-5.1 package
using the following commands:

  sudo apt-get install --reinstall mysql-server
  sudo dpkg --configure -a
  sudo apt-get -f install

This should resolve the first installation failure and put the
installation back into a consistent state.

** Changed in: mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu)
