I'm not sure freshclam was ment to be run by a normal user. There's a
freshclam daemon, which runs in the background as 'clamav' user, and it
takes care of updating the database. If you run it as a normal user, it
won't have permissions to open the logfiles, to open the database
directory, etc.
You can check that freshclam is running with the following command:
"ps axu |grep freshclam"
If it's not running, try starting it:
/etc/init.d/clamav-freshclam start
--
don't start freshclam
