I'd like to reopen this. 
2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:48:22 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
My /etc/init.d/apache2 was emptied in at least three servers, apache2 info

# apache2 -v
Server version: Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu)
Server built:   Sep 28 2010 12:52:38
Running on /etc/apache2/

I had to fix manually.
