Hello Adnan, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better!

It looks like the upgrade process is failing because it cannot stop
mysql properly.

Preparing to replace mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5.1 (using .../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.37-1ubuntu5.5_i386.deb) ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   ...fail!
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: warning: old pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   ...fail!
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.1_5.1.37-1ubuntu5.5_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

I believe this is related to the fact that the prerm scripts generated
by debhelper in karmic would fail if the service was already stopped.

Can you try making sure mysql is started before doing the update?

If that works, then I think its a legitimate bug that it would fail on trying to stop mysql, when mysql is already stopped, and may have already been fixed/reported for debhelper.

Marking Incomplete pending response from Adnan.
