@Sam Barker - you must have inadvertently fixed whatever error was
causing the "/usr/bin/mysqladmin --defaults-file=$HOME/debian.cnf ping"
command to fail.  Try breaking your my.cnf as others have suggested, and
you'll see the infinite loop still exists.
