I verified general functionality of the changes with:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=out count=1 bs=1M
$ ec2-bundle-image --image out --cert ~/ec2/cert.pem  --privatekey ~/ec2/pk.pem  --user 950047163771 --arch i386
$ ec2-upload-bundle --access-key ${access_key}  --secret-key ${secret_key} \
    --bucket ${USER}-ap-southeast-1 --manifest /tmp/out.manifest.xml --location ap-southeast-1
