I still have an error message if I change the kvm to kvm-balloon in /etc/libvirt/qemu/Duffman.xml :
root at homer:~# virsh start Duffman
error: Failed to start domain Duffman
error: internal error cannot parse QEMU version number in ''"

However both are executables, and both displays the version.
root at homer:~# kvm --version
QEMU PC emulator version 0.12.3 (qemu-kvm-0.12.3), Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard
root at homer:~# /usr/local/bin/kvm-balloon --version
QEMU PC emulator version 0.12.3 (qemu-kvm-0.12.3), Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard
root at homer:~# 

Do you have an idea of the cause ?
