The issue is related to:

* Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   ...fail!


Could you paste the output of running the mysqld init script stop action with debugging set to yes?

(Edit /etc/init.d/mysql to add 'set -x' at the beginning of the file and
then run sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop).
