i try it, but i will describe something additional  ...

First, i wanted to update my current system with the corresponding
menuitem 'System->Systemverwaltung->Aktualisierungsverwaltung'
The update begann ... there will be an update of the mysql-server-5.1
package ... while running dpkg during the update process, nothing
happens, will say there is only the display-message (this is an silly
translationtry from german to english)

(reading database ... 189714 files and directoriesare actually
installed)
preparing substitution of mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12
(with .../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu12.1 i8386.deb) ...

Noting happend then in the window (waiting several minutes up to 1
hour(!)) ther is not indication that the system try to use the harddrive
or whatever

I have to kill the process

Additional ther are messages in the systemprotocoll
