Yes! I have an LTSP environment with ubuntu-karmic and emachine-ez1600, it works!
With lucid no way (for me) 
Yesterady, I tried atftpd, same effect. I have to change my bug-report.-/ 
Maybe, is this the step the video-card/X is initialized?! Because the display get blank an 
comes back with "initrd.img ...... ready"
Is there a way to get more debugging info? There is nothing to analyse
