a) It was configured through wicd's interface.

b) I think you are probably on the right track here.  The DNS server was
set as my router since it passes on request.  When I disabled it, I also
disabled static DNS.  Now /etc/resolv.conf has two extra entries first
to actual DNS servers.

But wouldn't you know it, I can't even replicate the exact problem by
setting a static IP and /etc/resolve.conf only containing the static DNS
of my router.  However, I've been having some other networking issues
after setting the router to be the DNS.  It seems to be causing the
router to fall over.

Sorry for what seems to be a false alert.  The thing that grinds my
gears is that I've been looking for a solution for a while now, but
happened upon a single mention on a forum that qemu user-mode networking
sometimes has problems with a static wireless host device.

In short, I think we can probably close this as being a problem with my
router.  At least there is more information available in case anyone
ends up in the same situation.
