I've now tried with http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-
image-2.6.35-999-generic_2.6.35-999.201007021009_i386.deb which
continues to suffer.

I've also used Wireshark to examine my XP machine's packets, and I
repeatedly see lots of QUERY_PATH_INFO examining the various files in
the project. I'm guessing these time out...
