Public bug reported:
Ubuntu 9.10
mysql-client:
Installiert: 5.1.37-1ubuntu5

mysql-server:
Installiert: 5.1.37-1ubuntu5
Kandidat: 5.1.37-1ubuntu5
Versions-Tabelle:
*** 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
My Mysql-Installation was corrupt after a Ruby-on-Rails-Instalation.
First I did a complete new installation of Mysql
(sudo apt-get mysql-client mysql-server)
Afterwards everything worked fine - until I shut down the computer.
The next day I could not connect. Error message:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
Trying to restart mysql (/etc/init.d/mysql restart) gave me this message:
* Stopping MySQL database server mysqld [ OK ]
* /etc/init.d/mysql: WARNING: /etc/mysql/my.cnf cannot be read. See README.Debian.gz
* Starting MySQL database server mysqld install: cannot change owner and permissions of „/var/run/mysqld“: No such file or directory
Then I saw, that my.cnf had disappeared altogether (sudo find / -name
my.cnf had no result).
Thank you for caring.
