I will second the recommendation to remove network-manager...    I also 
have had success in earlier revs of ubuntu
in re-ordering the startup scripts so that NIS starts before autofs...  
dont remember if I had to do that in Karmic or not.

This problem has been around a while now on various ubuntu and other 
linux distros.  Network manager gets in
the way in a fixed-ip "corporate" environment. On the other hand, NIS is 
a real pain if you are getting and releasing IP addresses
frequently on a wireless LAN, which I believe is now a more frequent 
user scenario than a corporate scenario...
