I'd like to have the grub2 fix here backported to lucid, so 'update-
grub' could successfully run in lucid instances.

I tried a quick build of the lucid with '978_ubuntu_diskless_partitions.patch' applied, but grub-probe still fails like:
$ sudo grub-probe --device /dev/sda1
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1.  Check your device.map.
