Hi Luke,

Have you tried renicing mysqld?

renice 5 4589

This may give your other commands some priority over mysqld so they can
continue to log and help you diagnose the problem.

Please try that, and then on the next system lockup/slowdown, run 'ps
auxwww' and paste or upload the output here.
