Then two minutes later, without doing anything new:

kayodu at ubuntu:~$ mysql -u root -p

Your MySQL connection id is 1
Server version: 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 (Ubuntu)

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input
statement.

My old databases are still intact not purged or reinstalled with the
supposedly new installation and the instability of the mysql-server-5.1
remains.

Is there another way to get rid of the old databases that seem to have
been corrupted and causing the server to crash?
