I've upgraded twice since then. I'm not really sure what the situation
is now.

$ dpkg -l | grep mysql
...
rc mysql-server-5.0 5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10.2 MySQL database server binaries
ii mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3 MySQL database server binaries
...

Looks like I never got 5.0 to upgrade past this point, but that I did
get 5.1 to install. As it happens I'm due a safe-upgrade.

$ sudo aptitude update
...
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
...
Setting up libmysqlclient16 (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6) ...

Setting up mysql-client-core-5.1 (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6) ...
Setting up mysql-client-5.1 (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6) ...
Setting up mysql-server-core-5.1 (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6) ...
Setting up mysql-server-5.1 (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init/mysql.conf ...
mysql start/running, process 19293

Setting up mysql-server (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6) ...
...

Doesn't seem to be a problem any more.
