I can confirm this problem in 9.04:
Typing smb://servername in a nautilus windows location bar works. But
bookmarking this and trying to open the bookmark gives the error "No
application is registered....".
Using "Connect to server" gives the same problem.
After applying the fixes from the last post by Michael Gefen (adding
nautilus as smb:// protocol handler) it works.
This "should just work" - so can the gconf settings be included in a
bugfix release? Or should this bug be reported some where else in the
smb:/// No application is registered as handling this file
