No, I upgraded to autofs5 and that respecs the "+" entry in files like /etc/passwd, /etc/groups, /etc/shadow, /etc/auto.master. Autofs5 did the trick.

Status in "nis" package in Ubuntu: Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: nis
I have a need to include as server-side map in a local map so that I can
make some local overrides (in this case the home directory). This works
in CentOS 4.7, but not in Ubuntu, so I know it's possible to do with
NIS.
/etc/auto.home
userfolder -rw,soft,intr :/localhome/userfolder
+auto.company_home
This doesn't work. I only get "userfolder" showing up in my /home
folder and none of the 50+ entries that are in the auto.home map on the
NIS server. the "userfolder" entry overrides an entry in the server-
side map, instead pointing the user's home folder to a local folder
rather than an NIS share.
