Thanks for the quick response. This was entirely my fault. I thought I
remembered, in the past when I've upgraded Samba, that the upgrade
process wanted to write a new smb.conf file. So this time, I decided
to pre-emptively rename smb.conf so that it wouldn't be overwritten.
What I should have done is save a copy of it, not rename it. I fixed
my error and applied your suggested dpkg command and the configuration
successfully completed.

Normally I wouldn't have filed a bug report, but the automated process
led me through it and ...  You know the rest.
