I confirm the bug. It seems to happen on Karmic x86_64 only:

root at vendas:/home/pc# dpkg-reconfigure samba
 * Stopping Samba daemons                                                [ OK ]
sed: -e expression #1, char 140: unknown option to `s'

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: samba

  # aptitude install samba
  ...
  # dpkg-reconfigure samba
-  * Stopping Samba daemons                                                [ OK ]
+  * Stopping Samba daemons                                                [ OK ]
  sed: -e expression #1, char 140: unknown option to `s'

  I was asked two questions:

  * How do you want to run Samba? (Answer: daemons)
  * Create samba password database? (Answer: Yes)

  I did no fiddling with Samba prior to this. It's a Karmic install from
  scratch, not an upgraded Jaunty.
