ICMP packets cannot be delivered to a guest using -net user.
While you cannot ping your dns server, you should be able to resolve
names just fine. Try pinging www.ubuntu.com. You should see that the
name resolves fine, while you won't receive responses to your ping
packets.
Otherwise, TCP networking should be okay. You should be able to apt-get
update and dist-upgrade and browse the web, etc. UDP traffic, however,
won't work.
