Thank you! I suppose a search for "debugging samba" should have
occurred to me, but that is what I was looking for. As I said, "I can't
even tell where to look for errors." So ...
* This is a client issue.
* This worked in a previous release;
* Output of
dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}\n' | grep samba
libsmbclient 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7 samba install ok installed
samba-common 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7 samba install ok installed
smbclient 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7 samba install ok installed
smbfs 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7 samba install ok installed
* The smbclient commandline utility worked when I tested it just now,
but part of the problem is that various approaches (Connect to Server
gui, smb:// bookmark, smbmount) work once and then stop working. At this
moment, the GUI is also working. I'll check the command line utility
again at a point when the GUI fails. Probably this afternoon while I
desperately need access to the file server.
* I don't believe that a cifs mount is used.
* smbclient -L //remote_system says:
Domain=[CU] OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790 Service Pack 1] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2]
It also lists a fair amount of other data that I'm not sure I'm comfortable dumping here if it isn't needed. For instance, a lot of workstations are shown as "Servers" and the comment includes that staff person's full name.
