The problem is intermittent, occurring about 9 out of 10 times.

Ubuntu version: 8.10

Package: php5-cli
Version: 5.2.6-2ubuntu4.1

Package: php5-mysql
Version: 5.2.6-2ubuntu4.1

The problem goes away if I remove both mysql.ini and mysqli.ini from
/etc/php5/cli/conf.d
