Which version of Ubuntu are you using ?

In recent versions it is possible to define several VPNs and start/stop/reload them individually:
define /etc/openvpn/tunnel1.conf, /etc/openvpn/tunnel2.conf and /etc/openvpn/tunnel3.conf (each including whatever value you want for "client-connect script"), then:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/openvpn start tunnel1
$ sudo /etc/init.d/openvpn status
