Yes, I did that as soon as I had installed the OS, as I had figured out
(and posted on Ubuntu forums) that this was an issue.  I doublechecked
it after the mySQL upgrade, and it was still correct.  Maybe it just
needed the reboot to flush out.  I don't know, but as I said, it seems
to be working fine from the command-line and phpMyAdmin at this time.

It seems that you're using a non-standard directory (/data/mysql) to
store your MySQL data. This may lead to some issue with the default
mysqld apparmor profile as only /var/lib/mysql/ is supported by default.
Did you update mysqld apparmor profile before the package update?
