When the server is shut down the script still fails.

agd at agd-laptop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld                                 [fail] 

agd at agd-laptop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld                                 [fail] 
 * Starting MySQL database server mysqld                                 [ OK ] 
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'


My system upgraded a few times, so the mysql configuration didn't have a user set up for debian-sys-maint at localhost.  Probably affected by this  bug:
