[Bug 395241] [NEW] package mysql-server-core-5.0 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/sbin/mysqld', which is also in package mysql-server-core-5.1

Hi Mathias,

I uninstalled everything and started clean. I did following in order to
get mysql working.

1. install mysql-server-core-5.1
2. install mysql-server-5.1

At this step installation did not complete successful. On looking at log
I figured out that /var/run/mysqld folder does not exist and that'e
where mysqld fails to spawn itself.

3. At this point I created /var/run/mysqld
4. Changed owner ship by following:
sudo chown mysql:mysql /var/run/mysqld

After these changes I am able to run mysql and connect to it. But after
that when I was trying to install PHP5 and did sudo apt-get install
php5mysql, the mysql installation broke again. To me it seems that
php5mysql tries to install mysql-server-5.0 dependencies which conflicts
with mysql-server-5.1

So I had to restart again from point 1. Right now I am trying to find
how can I get php5mysql installed so that my LAMP installation goes
through.

Any inputs on this would be really great.

Best regards,
Shrini

It seems that you're trying to install MySQL 5.0 while having 5.1
already installed. Downgrading from 5.1 to 5.0 is not supported.
Could you try to uninstall 5.1 first?
