I wonder, could this call for a separate PHP version inside Ubuntu so that you could both install:
 - php5 -> php5.2
 - php5.3

>From the Karmic repositories?

Giving people some time to:
 - run their Jaunty sites on Karmic without any problems. Upgrade is seamless.
 - test-drive php5.3 the way it will be shipped with Karmic+1 (this could be uncompromising: short tags off by default, and everything, making it future-proof)

Obviously this excludes the LTS folks who won't face the PHP
compatibility issues until April 2010 - if they upgrade immediately, or
- 2013 if they really want to stretch it.
