You have been subscribed to a public bug:

1. Boot Gutsy LiveCD
2. Select "Placess::Connect to server..."
3. Select service "Windows share", enter LAN ip of a Windows machine and enter the name of an existing non-password protected network share on that machine.
4. Ubuntu creates a shortcut on the desktop, click it.
5. Ubuntu asks for username/password even though the network share is non-password protected.
6. No profit.

I don't know how the low levels of SAMBA work, but this kind of thing typically just work out of the box for Windows to Windows networking and it needs to work out of the box for Ubuntu to Windows networking too.

** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
