That appears to have worked around it.

[0 root at firefly ~]# df|egrep -i '(cifs|smb)'
[1 root at firefly ~]# echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled
[0 root at firefly ~]# mount /mnt/diverse
[0 root at firefly ~]# touch /mnt/diverse/test
[0 root at firefly ~]# exit
exit
[0 zerodogg at firefly ~]$ touch /mnt/diverse/test2
[0 zerodogg at firefly ~]$
