Getting the same 'not a directory' errors too.

FSTAB is unremarkable:

//10.x.xx.xx/DC\040Operations   /media/app1/dcops       cifs
credentials=/etc/samba/genericuser      0       0

Creating new files with nano works.  However, I can't edit the file once
it's been created.

Please let me know what other information I can provide.  Thanks!
