I have the same issue, the return value is null padded:
Char: Ord: 0
Char: y Ord: 121
Char: s Ord: 115
Char: D Ord: 68
Char: e Ord: 101
Char: s Ord: 115
Char: c Ord: 99
Char: r Ord: 114
Char: Ord: 0
Char: 0 Ord: 48
Char: Ord: 0
Char: Ord: 0
Char: Ord: 0
Char: Ord: 0
This works fine on current debian etch
