I don't know where to change this. (Ubuntu 8.04 , php-pear || php5
version 5.2.4-2ubuntu5)

The following:
System Configuration File      Filename         /usr/etc/pear.conf
should be:
System Configuration File      Filename         /etc/pear.conf
by default, or /usr/etc/pear.conf should be created and used.
