This is a problem for my network as well and I am not using ldap.  I am
using winbind.

This problem is part of a suite of issues.

The issues are:
1. Sometimes the above behavior happens as described.  It does not happen all the time.  
2. Much of the time it delays a few seconds, then gives a prompt.
3. Sometimes it comes up quickly
4. If I stay logged in for several hours, it seems to forget that my UID exists until I do a getent passwd <username>, after which it remembers.
