You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When using the "domainjoin-gui" tool to join an Active Directory (Win
2003) domain I was expecting to be able to type in domain name
(domain.local) and put in authentication details and then connect.

What actually happened:

1. 'domainjoin-gui' kept saying that it couldn't resolve the domain
name (domain.local and DOMAIN didn't work), BUT simple nslookup of
domain.local worked as expected - errorlog1.txt

2. After manually putting in "<ipaddress> domain.local" into /etc/hosts
the domainjoin-gui proceeded quite a bit further. But, in the process of
attempting to join the domain it killed GDM multiple times. One time I
had to 'CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE' to restart the whole session because it
didn't restore the window manager or desktop toolbars.

3. With the manual entry in /etc/hosts the domainjoin proceeded to
attempt to join the domain but failed with an 'unknown error' -
errorlog-join1.txt and errorlog-join2.txt

The final result is that I can't join Hardy Heron to my Active Directory (win2003) domain.

** Affects: likewise-open (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
