That did it, although the purge failed:
jim at jim-d620:~$ sudo apt-get purge samba

jim at jim-d620:~$ sudo apt-get install samba

samba is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.

No idea where the spurios files came from. Thanks for your help!
