To me it seems more like an issue with the ogg file. Could you try
re-encoding from scratch. In particular the audio seems to be of lower
quality than in subsequent screencasts. Perhaps it was just a bad run
and somehow the other media players compensate.
Having said that I've noticed that VLC tends to miss the first subtitle
of all videos I watch. I just thought this was my slow hardware.
