По поводу "совсем не работает" был не прав, опечатался слегка в 
/boot/grub/menu.lst
Проблема та же - с какого-то момента вместо прогрессбара идёт текстовая 
загрузка.
Кстати, выключается при этом нормально, демонстрируя "обратный" прогрессбар.
