I think this branch is ready now.

One question.

tempfile still prints a deprecation warning to stderr. This looks like it was introduced since Hirsute in Ubuntu and so also exists in Impish and Jammy currently. Do we still want the deprecation warning in Jammy, or should I drop the deprecation warning too, for Jammy, on the same principle as what we're doing for the which command? I ask because I'm not aware that anybody complained about the warning in Hirsute or Impish.
