I see, and fonts-noto does not exist in focal-updates yet. Would a no-change rebuild as an SRU be sufficient for the purpose?

Bug subscriptions are in place (and I just added myself too, since I hope that fonts-noto will be more important to most users soon).

Please note that most discussion happened before the l-s upload, so while we can hope for more input, I don't really expect much of that.

Some Arabic speaking users would have preferred a solution which does not require the use of an Arabic locale (i.e. as Kubuntu does it), but that wish can't be fulfilled without changing the fonts with the highest fontconfig precedence from DejaVu to Noto for all users. That's the possible future project I was talking about.

How would you define "finished"?

One aspect of testing would be to install Ubuntu from a groovy daily build with an Arabic locale (and connected to the net) and find that the better rendering is there instantly at first boot/login. That can't be accomplished until the packages are in main. So I'm not sure I see the point with waiting.
