I guess (note the "guess" ;)) this is related to the "ubuntu-usb" task, which was the installation device you can download and copy on an usb key instead of ordering CDs! (crazy time ;)).

It had more translations, more packages (like inskape) compared to the traditional desktop installation.
The description is:
"This task provides the extra packages installed on the Ubuntu desktop USB image, above and beyond those included on the Ubuntu CD image. It is neither useful nor recommended to install this task in other environments."

So, we still have the ubuntu-usb tasks in ubuntu, but I don't know if anyone is using it. Maybe raise it to -devel ML and ask if there is still any use of it? If not, I think we can remove all usb* files in the seed and remove the metapackage (so, leaving those untouched). In that case, the net benefit is that only "supported" will need to be redone per package list, as live is.
