I'm fine with the general approach, but I do think we need to fix the memdisk bootstrap bit before landing this.

I suspect you're running into variables not being exported, although I haven't quite been able to tickle the exact situation in question.  Go back to the memdisk approach and try using "export" on all the net_* variables (you can list them by inserting "set; sleep 10" at some strategic point)?  If that deals with it, then we can look into a neater version of the same thing.
