Can you please as well edit debian/changelog so that it has your name when you are doing the change?
I would suggest reading this short guideline about how to setup and run this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/HandsOn#Environment_setup-1

and then use dch -i as in the example + describing your change.
